March 1974

Autumn Fair and Floral Carpet: In spite of the very wet weather all this year, Maleny Horticultural Society staged a successful autumn Fair and floral carpet in aid of the Sub-normal Children’s Welfare Association and the School of Arts Committee. Entries were down in some sections, but the overall display was well worth seeing.

The floral carpet made by members under the direction of Mrs E. Thomas, featured an eight-pointed star in the centre, and geometric designs set in a green pine base. The centre flowers were in white and pale pastel shades, gradually deepening to darker colours round the edges, with an outside frame of blue hydrangeas. Part of the stage was set up as By the Seashore in a scene devised by Mrs V. Dougherty and erected with the help of several Horticultural Society members.

Wettest Year on Record

Records of the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) indicate that this was the wettest year on record for Maleny. The flood of 1974 had serious consequences for all of Brisbane and Ipswich including Maleny but it didn’t affect the Floral Carpet being displayed.
